Like many holistic practitioners, I fell into my profession as a result of
my own personal health challenges. While living in the Himalayan mountains
of India, I had been going through a cleansing crisis following a
homeopathic constitutional that was moving through my body too quickly. It
was cleaning out in the form of back to back large and very painful
abscesses that were threatening to become toxic since they were not draining
on their own. I visited the local physician who could only prescribe
antibiotics for each round, after lancing each time they occurred. He was
helpless to offer a reason as to the cause. After 6 months of these episodes
and the seventh abscess, I was thoroughly frustrated. I turned to a friend
who was a herbalist and aromatherapist for help. She patiently treated me
with poultices and essential oils. In addition to the anti-microbial,
antibacterial and anti-inflammatory characteristics of the oils, the
fragrances helped me to relax, as you can imagine how stressed I felt with
all this going on. Within a couple of days, the size reduced to half and
shortly after, drained by itself. I never had another recurrence.
Not everyone has to be convinced of the power of essential oils by such a
painful experience! An aromatherapy massage, which is the combination of
essential oils and a variety of massage techniques, is one of the most
relaxing and luxurious treatments one can have.
There is nothing more powerful than a direct experience. I knew that I had
stumbled upon something very potent, therapeutic and magical. That is what
led me to pursue my certification in aromatherapy.
