COURSE OUTLINE:

Introduction to Essential Oil Therapy

Throughout the ages, plants have been used for their healing properties. Despite the fact that the therapeutic benefits of plants have been known for centuries, the last two decades have seen a tremendous resurgence of interest in our ability to harness these benefits through the essential oils the plants yield. Modern day research has been & continues to be performed which verifies not only the emotional but the physical benefits that essential oils provide. This course provides an overall introduction to:

  • Aromatherapy origins
  • Antibacterial, antiviral, sedative, antispasmodic, inhalation, expectorant and mood altering effects of essential oils
  • Essential Oil safety
  • Versatile uses of Essential oils and how they are used in Aromatherapy

Chemistry of Essential Oils

Essential oils are made up of many chemical constituents – no two oils are alike in their structure or their effects. You will learn the main chemical components of each essential oil and their trace elements while applying the principles of organic chemistry

Chemistry of Carrier Oils

100% pure, cold pressed carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils allowing the essential oil to be ‘carried’ onto the skin. Different carrier oils offer different properties. The choice of the carrier oil will depend on the therapeutic benefit needed. Learn the main components of carrier oils,, the nutritional value and their therapeutic properties.

Anatomy & Physiology

Learn the basic introduction of the study of the skeletal, muscular, vascular, neurological, digestive, respiratory, genito-urinary, endocrine systems and the autonomic nervous system.

Relaxation Technique through Essential Oils

Explore the various relaxation techniques commonly used with essential oil therapy including Colour Therapy, and Guided Imagery along with understanding the psychodynamics of the essential oils.

Olfactory system

An in-depth study of the power of essential oils on the olfactory system (the body’s system of smell) and how the molecules of essential oils are transported from the olfactory system to the limbic system which influences the endocrine and autonomic nervous system.

Metabolism and Absorption of essential oils via the skin and respiratory tract

Learn the route essential oils take when applied to the skin and respiratory tract. Understand how therapeutic effects of essential oils take place.

Botanical Classification (Taxonomy)

An introduction to the principle of Taxonomy with a focus on botanical classification as it relates to essential oils. Learn the method by which an individual plant is placed into the botanical family.

Blending Oils

Learn how to differentiate between the different functional groups and how to create therapeutic blends by compounding their chemical components.

Learn how to create a safe synergy of essential oils for product formulations and perfume blending.

Functional Groups

Learn about the eight main functional groups of essential oils, their chemical components, activities and properties

  • Anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal: oils that combat viruses, bacteria & fungus on and in the body
  • Sedative properties: essential oils used as sedatives and relaxants and how to integrate them into everyday lifestyle
  • Carminative effects: Essential oils for the digestive system
  • Hormonal effects: oils that balance the endocrine systems and create a sense of balance in the body
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Expectorant & anti-spasmodic effects

Basic training in making creams and lotions

Learn how to make all natural skin care products for your practice. Creams, ointments, lotions, body salts, body scrubs and masks.

Macerating Oils

Learn how to create base oils with dried herbs.

Aromatherapy Massage and treatments

Learn Healing Fragrances signature massage techniques that incorporate Shiatsu, Reflexology, Acupressure Swedish massage Aroma hot Stone massage.

50 Essential Oils
(50 minutes each oil)

Understand the uses of 50 essential oils through an in-depth study of their therapeutic & psychological effects. Safety of Essential Oil and the use of Herbs and extracts with essential oils. All oils will be taught according to their main chemical group.

Assessment & Human Behavior

This component of the course is to teach a basic understanding of Human Behavior and patterns. It will include understanding types of emotions and characteristic of an individual.

Healing Fragrances School of Aromatic Sciences Certificate Program

Healing Fragrances School of Essential Oil Therapeutics “Essential Oils Therapeutic Certificate Program” offers a 350 academic hour (1hr = 50 minutes) program that will teach an in-depth study of Essential Oil Therapeutics along with assignments that include:

EXAM REQUIREMENTS

150 hours of independent study hours that include the following:

  • Essential Oil Data Cards: Essential Oil Data cards that include informational data on 50 essential oils
  • Physiological & Treatment Data Cards: Reference cards pertaining to Aromatherapy treatment for physiological disorders
  • 30 clinical case studies: 30 Essential Oil Therapeutic treatments that include assessments, essential oils used, and application of Essential Oil Therapy.
  • 2000 word Term Paper Based on Essential Oil Researched Study: that pertains to the community or other occupations (e.g. in the field of education, palliative care workers, mid-wifery etc.) to acquire expertise in the field of Essential Oil Therapeutics.

CLASS STRUCTURE

OPTION A: 200 hrs academic hours total class study, one day per week, over a (10) month period.

CLASS SIZE: Maximum ten (10) students per class
