HEALING FRAGRANT WATERS
by Danielle Sade
“Bathing with the essences of nature embodies our being
with flowing pleasure and health”
If you have a bathtub, you have the potential for a healing
retreat right in your own home. Taking a bath with essential
oils can provide you with an opportunity to refocus your
thoughts on your mind, body and spirit. Adding essential
oils to your bath requires little effort and provides real
physical and emotional benefits. Your skin, the largest organ
of your body, is highly permeable especially when it is warm
and wet.
The sensation of lying in a warm aromatic bath for 15 minutes
can be very powerful and healing. Physiologically speaking,
the warmth and subtle pressure of water stimulates and soothes
your body, inside and out. Bathing prompts blood vessels
to dilate slightly, your heart rate to slow, and your muscles
to release tension.
For example, geranium oils can penetrate the skin to help
it resist infection and heal itself and, at the same time,
restore the skin’s moisture balance. When taking a bath
with essential oils, the volatile molecules travel into your
nose and lungs. They are then transferred to your bloodstream
and transported to your brain and other body organs creating
calming and healing effects throughout the systems.
These fragrances work on the conscious and unconscious responses.
Take for instance, rose oil, a scent that may remind you
of love and at the same time stimulate receptors in the brain
that relieve depression, grief and sadness, calm the nerves,
and regulate the menstrual cycle.
