Yarrow has a bittersweet, warm, herbaceous aroma. It calms the digestive system, soothes muscle and joint pain and boosts the immune system. It is also good for dry skin and the scalp. 


Associated with Achilles, (hence its botanical name), it is claimed he used it for healing battle wounds. It was also traditionally worn as a charm to protect against evil, as well as to attract love. In China, the stalks of Yarrow feature in ritual divination in the I Ching.

Properties:  Antiseptic, Anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial anti-spasmodic.

Mind & Body:  This oil is benifical for major life transitions. 

Aromatherapist recommendations:

Yarrow is used for infections of the skin and resertory infections.  It sooths muscle and joint pain.  It also is used for dry skin on the scalp.


To maintain healthy hair and scalp, try adding 10 drops of Yarrow and 5 drops of Cedarwood to 100ml of unfragranced shampoo and/or conditioner. Use as usual but massage the conditioner well into the scalp and leave for five minutes before rinsing.


At the end of a hectic day, try unwinding in a warm bath with the following blend stirred in: 3 drops of Yarrow, 3 drops of Chamomile (German or Roman) and 2 drops of Lavender.


Main Theraputic Properties: Anti-inflammatory, Antirheumatic, Antispasmodic, Analgesic, Digestive stimulant, Anticatarrhal.


Contraindications: Do not use if pregnant or breast feeding. Do not use on children under the age of 2. Do not use on people with epilepsy or fever. Do not use at more than 2% dilution on the skin or mucous membrane areas.
